Energy
in Asia and in Laos
Challenges and Policies
Challenges and Policies
Our meetings commenced on 14 October 2014 with an evening with Barend Frielink. Barend is fromAmsterdam and has worked for over 33 years in developing countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, including, for the last twenty years with the Asian Development Bank. He served as Deputy Country Director in Laos for the last 4 years, before retiring in December 2014.
Barend has kindly given us the slideshow he used during the presentation. It was a fascinating evening, taking us into areas most of us knew little about and, both enlightening us and giving us cause for concern for how the future energy requirements for the region might be met.
During his presentation, Barend began by contrasting the current situation with projections into the not too distant future for the whole of Asia, considering the resources available and what the possibilies are.
The slides speak for themselves.
We then moved from considering the region as a whole, to looking at the situation as it particularly applied to Laos.
At this point, Barend had included the first of several slides of questions. These, however, proved unnecessary since the questions had been flowing throughout the presentation, and continued to do so.
This was a wonderful start to the planned program of conversations we are launching.
We are very grateful to Barend Frielink and ADB for the excellent presentation.
We are looking forward to many more enlightened evenings amongst engaged people, who can bring their skills and knowledge to teach entertain, and enable fascinating conversations to develop.
